Code Moms

A Mom-and-Son Coding Team

Setting Our Goals

When we started this journey, the goal of learning code was pretty daunting, as if we were looking up at a steep mountain before hitting the trail.

Since that first day, our trail has had many pivots, switchbacks, roadblocks and steep hills. But we keep moving forward, step by step. One of the reasons why we have been able to stay on track is our dedication to put in the time every day. The success of our goal is dependent on our intention, our actions and our commitment to not give up.

Intention - Action - Commitment

Intention

Sign by Mountain with Learn Code

First, we set a goal to pair-learn for 500 hours in one year. Most online schools have different learning tracks, such as: front or back-end development, web design, Javascript, Ruby, gaming, mobile apps, etc. Since we are both artists, we decided to set our intention on learning front-end web development.

Action

Setting Goals

Next, we signed up with a few online coding schools that had tracks for front-end development. We started with Treehouse, Code School and Code Academy. As we learned new topics, it was important to practice. We would create our own mini-projects and "learn by doing."

Commitment

Setting Goals

Finally, we needed to have a goal that we could commit to. Since we were pair-learning, we had to find a block of time that would work for both our schedules. To keep us motivated, we created a visual board called "The Tower of Code" that had 500 boxes (one box for each hour).
